responsibility

Santa Rita has made a commitment to help students develop life skills by focusing on one character trait each month, as inspired by the book and website Character Counts. This character trait is incorporated not only into serious discussions in the classroom, but also into many other student activities.  We would like to share the highlighted trait each month with you and offer ideas on how to bring these important life skills into your daily conversations and activities at home.

Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility,  Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

» Do what you are supposed to do

» Always do your best

» Be self-disciplined

» Persevere: keep on trying!

» Use self-control

» Be accountable for your choices

» Think before you act — consider the consequences

Suggestions for parents:

Talk with your children. Do you have any life experiences you can relate to your children that would illustrate the value of being responsible? Ask your children how being responsible has helped them. What does it means to be responsible? What happens if you are not responsible?

Discuss the lives of notable public figures that show responsible or irresponsible behavior.

Read one book related to the theme of responsibility during November/December. The Los Altos City Library and our own SR Librarian Mrs. Granoff have offered reading lists specific to “Responsibility”.

Encourage your child to write his/her short comments related to this trait and put it in the CHARACTER COUNTS! box located in the Santa Rita Office. Your child may write about someone (real or fictional) that he/she believes models this character trait, a responsible action observed by your child, a response to a classroom discussion, or any other ideas about “Responsibility”. Mr. Peck will regularly pick comments and share them with the students.

Share what your responsibilities are to your family, work, country and religion. Your kids may not even be aware of how this makes a difference in their daily lives.

Post the above definition of “Responsibility” in a visible location in your home.

Consider becoming a “Character Coach” to help plan and organize Character Counts! activities and develop this worthwhile life skills program at Santa Rita.  Contact Debbie Munro at debbieatwhitespaceink.com 941-9541 or Shauna Nash sjhnashatcomcast.net 948-8845.

This is only one of the six pillars of character.
