Conflict Resolution
At Santa Rita, we teach students to use conflict resolution both in the classroom and on the playground. Students are taught the following steps to help resolve their conflicts:
How to Talk it Out:
- Stop! Cool Off!
- Talk and listen.
- Brainstorm solutions.
- Choose the idea both like best.
- Make a plan. Go for it!
- Lights! Camera! Action!
Just for Kids
Just for Kids is a lunchtime program for 2nd and 3rd grade students. This program is designed to instill healthy living skills in elementary age children by teaching about substance abuse and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices. Just for Kids establishes a safe environment for each group of children to creatively learn about themselves, each other, and their families. The children are involved in a curriculum, which is interactive, playful, and incorporates artistic expression. If you are interested in your second or third grade child participating in Just For Kids, please contact the school office for a permission slip.
Kidstars
Kid Stars is an on-campus social skills group for first grade students. Each week, a group of 5-8 children will be selected from the first grade classrooms and every week there will be a different theme that will be taught. Some of the themes we'll explore will include: Greeting and the Importance of a Friendly Face, Negotiation, Initiating Play, Entering an already established play activity, Emotional Regulation, Expanding Creativity, and much, much more! The group will meet 3 times per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for 30 minutes each time. Each of your children will likely participate in 1-2 different weeks so that all first graders have an opportunity to attend.
Project Cornerstone
Project Cornerstone is a Santa Clara County-wide movement based on survey research involving over two million children across the United States. This research, conducted by Search Institute, identified 41 developmental assets that help children thrive. The study found a direct correlation between high numbers of perceived assets and less 'at risk' behavior among children in grades 5-12. The more assets children perceive within their communities the less likely they are to be truant, do drugs, and attempt suicide. None of these assets cost anything to provide and there are no socio-economic, racial, or geographic groups that are less able to provide these assets to their youth. Keep reading to find out what Santa Rita is doing to create an asset-rich school environment for our students.
Student Study Team
The purpose of the Student Study Team is to offer a supportive atmosphere for teachers and parents to share concerns and ideas in order to plan methods and strategies for improved educational and social/emotional support.
Student Study Team Members include the child's parent(s), the principal, school psychologist, classroom teachers, and the resource specialist. When needed, the ELL specialist and Title I reading teacher are included. Sometimes the child is invited to attend, if appropriate.
The goal of the Student Study Team is to design individual accommodations and/or modifications to be implemented in the child's classroom to provide the needed or requested support. A follow-up session may be requested to revisit concerns and/or provide additional support and suggestions to the classroom teacher. The decision to pursue a formal evaluation is made by the Team based on the results of the attempted accommodations and/or modifications.
