A Message From Your Librarian

August 2011

Dear Santa Rita Families,

Thanks to the Los Altos Education Foundation, which means all of you who support its goals, the district’s school libraries are open this year. Many schools throughout the state of California and elsewhere in the country have had to close their school libraries for lack of funding. Please keep this in mind when LAEF asks for your pledge this year; we are very, very lucky!

For families new to Santa Rita, here is how the library program runs. Every class, kindergarten through sixth, pays a weekly group visit to the library at an assigned time. At the beginning of the year library lessons focus on library procedures, care of books, and the general responsibility we share as citizens of a school community for the health and smooth functioning of our library. Younger grades listen to a story while upper grade library lessons tie to the curriculum, library skills, our diverse community, current events, or literacy enrichment. The library is also available to 1st-6th grades at snack recess and lunch recess for those who wish to work on homework, to read, or to visit quietly with a friend or two.

Parents support the library in two very significant ways: by coming with a child’s class to help with the checking in, checking out, and shelving of books (training provided!), and by donating to the library through the Birthday Book Program. While LAEF is providing the means for staffing the libraries, each school is dependent upon its community for funds dedicated to library purchasing. Our Birthday Book Program makes it possible for me to keep up with the eager readers at Santa Rita School by bringing new books to the library shelves. Thank you in advance for contributing this way!

You are welcome to contact me by phone or email if you have any questions about the library, our programs or our policies.

Thank you,

Mrs. Granoff
