Hello Santa Rita families,

This week was toasty and it looks like things will cool down in the coming days. Luckily our kids didn’t melt and we were able to bring students in the multi and they had the option to go to the library to get some reprieve. PE was mostly in the multi and we appreciate Mr. Cerecedes being flexible in his planning. Be sure to have your kids bring water bottles and our teachers will remind them to stay hydrated.

TK started full-day this week and they did such a great job! I am so proud of our youngest Bobcats!

Science Camp and Pigeon Point

6th graders leave for camp on Tuesday and one of our 5th grade classes leaves for Pigeon Point on Wednesday. It is such a special experience, but it can be hard to be away from home. Discomfort usually leads to growth as our kids learn to be more independent and I know they are going to have a wonderful time. They will come back stronger and more confident!

Mural

You may have noticed that we are painting the large wall on the portable facing the parking lot. Our muralist will be working on it through the weekend and we are encouraging classes to come talk with him about his art work. Once finished, I would love for you to take pics with your kiddos and email them to me. It’s going to look amazing!

🌎 Mark Your Calendar for International Day! 🌎

We’re moving this wonderful event to October this year! Join us on Friday, October 2, from 5:00–7:00 PM for an evening celebrating the many cultures in our Santa Rita community.

We need YOUR help to make it a success!

Potluck: Bring a favorite dish from your heritage to share! Trays will be available in the office the week of September 28.

Country Booths: They were a huge success last year, and we'd love to have even more! Sign up here to host a booth. If a country/region you're interested in already has a host, please contact them to help out. Booths can include posters, artifacts, currency, traditional clothing, food, games, or anything you'd like to share. Tri-fold boards are available from the office. See these photos for ideas!

6th Grade Flag Parade: Our 6th graders will continue the tradition of choosing flags to carry during the parade.

Dance Party: We will skip small-group dances this year because it is very close to our last festival in May. Instead, we'll end the evening with a dance party on blacktop! Small-group dances and performances will return next year!

Community Flags: We'll display flags representing the many countries and regions in our Santa Rita community around the school. If your country isn't on the list, please email Yang Liu at daisy_ly99@hotmail.com to add it.

We can't wait to celebrate with all of our Santa Rita families on October 2!

Picture Day September 14th

On Monday we will have Picture Day all day at Santa Rita. Our Picture Company, Generations, will bring their photographers and they will take outdoor group pictures and individual pictures in the multi.

New Volunteer Authorization Process

Beginning this school year, LASD is introducing a new Volunteer Authorization Process that provides one consistent system for all school volunteers. The new process builds on procedures already in place for certain volunteer roles and aligns with updated California law and district policy.

To make the process as simple as possible, volunteers are grouped into three levels based on the type of volunteer work they perform. Most classroom volunteers who are always under the supervision of an LASD staff member will complete a straightforward application and tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or testing.

Volunteers who may work independently with students or transport students will complete additional requirements appropriate to those roles.

A new Volunteer webpage is now available and includes:

An overview of the three volunteer levels
Information about whether you are considered a visitor or a volunteer
Step-by-step instructions for each volunteer level
Links to all required forms and resources

To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.

Living Classroom Docent Training

Living Classroom is seeking volunteers to teach our fun nature-based lessons and help care for our school gardens. No experience necessary as we teach you everything you need to know. Please join us from 9:30am-12:30pm on Mondays 8/31-10/19* at the LASD iLearn Studio to train to become a volunteer docent (*no training on 9/7 - Labor Day). If Mondays don't work for you, please ask about our apprentice-style training option. If you are interested in helping to care for your school garden, please contact Living Classroom Garden Manager, Sandi Elefant. Become an Art Docent!

The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.

New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.

Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!
