What a week! Our 6th graders and Mrs. Middleton’s class did an amazing job at science camp and Pigeon Point. I am so proud of how well they took care of each other and represented Santa Rita with respect and pride and joy for learning! It takes a lot of courage to leave home for a few days and we appreciate all your support in making it happen. Special thank you to all of our chaperones who were able to attend! Oh, and the kids will be exhausted when they get home…you’re welcome:)
We have some really fun events planned in the coming weeks so please make sure you are connected through Parent Square to get updates. Our PTA is doing such great work to support the Bobcat community and we are always looking for more help. Please let us know if you need help exploring opportunities to contribute.
Hispanic Heritage Month
From September 15 through October 15, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month—a time to recognize and honor the rich cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for our students and families to learn, explore, and celebrate together!
Families looking for ways to celebrate in our community might enjoy these local, kid-friendly events:
- Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose: Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with hands-on art activities, music, dance, storytelling, and cultural experiences throughout the month. Learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month at CDM
- San Francisco Public Library – ¡VIVA! Latinx Heritage: SFPL is offering more than 60 free programs this fall, including music, crafts, performances, storytimes, and family activities. Explore ¡VIVA! at SFPL
- Día de los Muertos at Children’s Discovery Museum: On November 1, families can enjoy storytelling, art activities, giant skeleton puppets, and a Calaveras procession while learning about Día de los Muertos traditions. Learn more about Día de los Muertos

LAEF’s Fall Fundraising Campaign is underway, with a push to encourage donations now through September 28. Thanks to the generosity of many families, we are now at 38% of our fundraising goal. Beginning this school year, LASD is introducing a new Volunteer Authorization Process that provides one consistent system for all school volunteers. The new process builds on procedures already in place for certain volunteer roles and aligns with updated California law and district policy.
To make the process as simple as possible, volunteers are grouped into three levels based on the type of volunteer work they perform. Most classroom volunteers who are always under the supervision of an LASD staff member will complete a straightforward application and tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or testing.
Volunteers who may work independently with students or transport students will complete additional requirements appropriate to those roles.
- An overview of the three volunteer levels
- Information about whether you are considered a visitor or a volunteer
- Step-by-step instructions for each volunteer level
- Links to all required forms and resources
To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.

We’re moving this wonderful event to October this year! Join us on Friday, October 2, from 5:00–7:00 PM for an evening celebrating the many cultures in our Santa Rita community.
We need YOUR help to make it a success!
Potluck: Bring a favorite dish from your heritage to share! Trays will be available in the office the week of September 28.
Country Booths: They were a huge success last year, and we'd love to have even more! Sign up here to host a booth. If a country/region you're interested in already has a host, please contact them to help out. Booths can include posters, artifacts, currency, traditional clothing, food, games, or anything you'd like to share. Tri-fold boards are available from the office. See these photos for ideas!
6th Grade Flag Parade: Our 6th graders will continue the tradition of choosing flags to carry during the parade.
Dance Party: We will skip small-group dances this year because it is very close to our last festival in May. Instead, we'll end the evening with a dance party on blacktop! Small-group dances and performances will return next year!
Community Flags: We'll display flags representing the many countries and regions in our Santa Rita community around the school. If your country isn't on the list, please email Yang Liu at daisy_ly99@hotmail.com to add it.

The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.
New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.
Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!

Living Classroom is seeking volunteers to teach our fun nature-based lessons and help care for our school gardens. No experience necessary as we teach you everything you need to know. Please join us from 9:30am-12:30pm on Mondays 8/31-10/19* at the LASD iLearn Studio to train to become a volunteer docent (*no training on 9/7 - Labor Day). If Mondays don't work for you, please ask about our apprentice-style training option.
